-The Genesis of the Eureka Springs Tom Kennedy Memorial Shrine

HISTORY
Created during the Eureka Springs Art Car Weekend on May 24-25, 2009.  Envisioned by Mina Leierwood and Maryanna Harstad, facilitated and hosted by Ralph Wilson and Ranaga Farbiarz, with help from Rich & Pam Molden, Bill Vierick, Rex Rosenberg, Steve Liggett, Dave & Irene Majors and Kate Pearson.  With additional support from Harrod, Hunter, Alicia, Natalie and all who knew and loved Tom.  It’s permanent home/location is Celestial Windz Harmonic Bizaar, 381 Highway 23 south, Eureka Springs, Ar. 72632.  In the parking area next to the World’s Largest Windchime, the shrine is accessible 24-7.  We hope everyone will someday get to experience this wonderful, joyful expression of creativity, love and respect.

It was Mina (Bee Bike) Leierwood and Maryanna (Anishinabe Legacy) Harstad’s vision: Bring a boat, o.k. it turned out to be a kayak, and a vial of Tom Kennedy’s ashes to Eureka Springs, Arkansas for Art Car Weekend, and something special was going to happen, it had to.  It was important being with friends who knew Tom.  Mina emailed Ralph (Flag Car) Wilson, aka Mr. Shrine, to ask his assistance with the project and the wheels were set in motion.  Ralph was leaving town to teach a workshop he had scheduled in Wilmington, N.C. but the email from Mina convinced him, through an intuitive link and the added persuasion of his Bisbee, Az. friend, Kate (Love 23) Pearson, to stay and work on the shrine.  Mina & Maryanna cut the end off a kayak, found in the rafters of Mina’s garage, to fit into Maryanna’s hatchback Art Car.  With the kayak, a vial of ashes and a carload of art supplies, they set off for Eureka Springs.

Friday night, at Bill (Shuttle Van) Vierick’s welcome party Mina brought Harrod and Mr. Shrine,
to the Anishinabe Legacy to show them the kayak.  Her enthusiasm for the shrine buiilding was infectious and her faith was solid.  Kate and Ralph had come by my shop earlier that day to check out The World’s Largest Tuned Musical Windchime.  Their visit convinced me to go to Bill’s that night, where I first met Mina and Maryanna.   When Ralph called me over to the kayak-filled car I had no idea what was up.  Ralph, however, knew that we were going to be involved in the making of the Tom Kennedy shrine, but all I knew was that these women needed some room in their car so they could enjoy the next day’s activities downtown.  I wasn’t planning on participating in the Art Car Weekend at all, but there we were standing in front of the Anishinabe hearing about the mission the Minneapolis women were on.  Mina was adamant that the shrine to Tom be created over the weekend.  Ralph knew he had to be involved.  At that point I felt like a spectator, but a place was needed to realize the vision and I happened to have the space and tools to help it come together.  By Monday afternoon, we all knew the purpose of why we met at Bill’s that night.  None of us realized, though, at the time, how profound that experience was going to be.

Tom’s shrine has now taken on a life of it’s own, as a beacon of a life worth living: of love, joy and committment to a greater good.  It’s life, however, has just begun and we invite everyone who feels drawn to contribute something to it’s evolution.  We’ve had two consecrations of the shrine.  One on Memorial Day night, with Mina, Maryanna, Ralph, Bill and myself.  The Shuttle Van provided a shroud of fog that permeated the ceremony.  The next was the permanent installation Ralph and I did with added assistance from the Conduit, a travelling group of sound healers whose mission is to Gong the Planet.  The gongs are instruments of global peace in their hands.  They were thrilled to be a part of the creative flow that marked the shrine’s genesis.

Tom’s remarkable life continues to influence and inspire all who knew him and those who will be fortunate to experience his memorial shrine.  Please visit if you are in the area.

You may send items to be placed at the shrine to:

Ranaga Farbiarz’s thoughts and feelings: (June 15th, 2009)

I never met Tom.  I barely knew of his work, but the spirit of the project was overwhelming.  His obituary had been in Time magazine the previous week and I felt the tragedy of his death.  Mina and Maryanna’s determination and loving energy opened my heart to want to participate in creating a fitting memorial to a wonderful man, who had given so much to the art car community.

We planned on meeting Sunday morning at 10 a.m. to begin the work.  It was a labor of love for all involved.  A creative flow, the likes of which I have never experienced.  I got to know Tom through the stories that were told during the creation of his memorial.  Those of us who worked intimately on the shrine became connected on a deeply spiritual level. The experience has transformed my feelings towards the art car movement.  I was reawakened to the original spirit that had drawn me into the art car world, only I didn’t know it could still exist for me. The people, the creativity the no bullshit, ego-less giving for a cause larger than ourselves.  This is what I imagine Tom was all about.  Seeing his work, hearing people who knew him personally share stories and anecdotes, working together to elevate the awareness of the joy of life and sharing of love. Float on bro, keep spreading the love and joy!  It ain’t over ’til the next Big Bang!  Thank you, Tom, brother in spirit, your presence will be forever felt!

Maryanna Harstad’s thoughts and feelings:

Mina and I had been mulling over the idea of heading to Eureka Springs for a while.  As weeks went by after Tom’s death, we began recovering from the shock and started hearing stories of the memorial service in San Francisco. We realized that we wanted to get together with others who knew Tom. The trip was planned and the shrine idea started to take shape.  My car (like a  lot of art cars) had a few problems.  Mina had started using the phrase “What would Tom Kennedy do?” Well Tom for certain wouldn’t let the possibility of a breakdown prevent him from taking a journey to see friends.  I can picture in my mind a scene last summer when a crew of artists/mechanics were working underneath the Greyhound bus so Tom, Haideen and Mike could get on the road from Minneapolis.  With WWTKD as a touchstone, we hit the road to Eureka. Twists of fate, serendipity, synchronicity karma, coincidence – whatever you call it – a list of all we experienced would be pages long.  It happened with hearts that were both heavy and joyful. It was extraordinary.
Maryanna Harstad

Ralph Wilson’s thoughts and feelings:

Dear Mina, (May 26, 2009)
Thank-You for all your help.  We consecracted the Tom Kennedy shrine last night, Memorial day 2009.  I want to thank-You, Maryanna, Kate(Love 23), Ranaga, Pam(Kuntry Peddlur) and all who worked on the shrine.  We started sunday am, and it flowed like a river, with all of us working as one.  The shrine is so beautiful.  We moved the shrine to a spot right along Hwy 23 S. In eureka springs.ar.  It is on the site of the world`s largest wind chime.  It faces East.  The altar piece is a Kayak, which Mina and Maryanna brought from Minneapolis. I had copper from Bisbee, I will send pictures out soon.  Harrod and Hunter were here, it was very much an Art car family Project.  I was very moved, I had meet Harrod and Tom In Santa Fe, at the folk art museum in the 90`s at a recycling show.  The shrine will eventuall live in its own little house(Nicho) and have shelves for folks who wish to bring things, it is accesible 24/7, and there will be signboards on either side telling the whole Tom story.  I was so moved and grateful for the way it flowed.
Shrine On!

Greetings, (May 29, 2009)
I have built many, many shrines in over 25 years of doing this. This one is very very moving to me personally.  I had met Tom and Harrod at a recycling show at the Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe, in the early 90`s.  They invited 10 art car people, and 10 recycling artists, Harrod reminded me of this.

The Shrine is a permanent installation, we dedicated it on Memorial Day, last Monday.
Ranaga, who built the world’s largest wind chimes, and myself have sworn to be keepers of the shrine.  Mina and Maryanna from Minneapolis, and Kate from Bisbee convinced me to stay in Eureka Springs for the Art Car Weekend and potential shrine building.  I was on my way east to do workshops, something told me to be here.  Eventually we will build a house for the shrine, with shelves so people can leave mementos there.  If you are close to here, please call me or Ranaga, we have places to stay.

It was many people working as one.  Death does inspire art. Mina brought a vial of ashes with her.   They are in a small box she made inside the shrine.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Every day at 7pm we light a candle and send good thoughts.  This whole thing is magic and I am so honored to be a part of it.
Love Hugs, Ralph

(May 31, 2009)
Boy, i am so connected to this shrine.  I can usually let them go, but it was hard to leave the shrine tonight.  Fear tells me about disasters, faith is the flip side.  Tom finally said to me,  “go home”.  He said it was my desire to go home and be in that beautiful peaceful place, but as god has said to me, you have work to do.

I pray for the strength and direction to do it.  And you all have helped me so much, with a real project from the heart of all of us.  I am so blessed.  I as you know am pure stream of consciousness.

Ranaga was under his wind chime surrounded by gongs, bells and tibetan bowls.
He had a vision that Mina and Maryanna, were holding his hands.  I sat nearby, and felt I was being lifted up.  If that is heaven, nirvana, the hereafter then it is a beautiful golden glowing lightness, where all is well.  I do go on, all my love and hugs
bye bye, Shrine man

(June 13, 2009)  Yes, in the building of this Tom and I have had many conversations.  Someday we will meet and I will share with you.  His root message to me was never take yourself to seriously, and keep on your Art Ed Outreach, no matter what.
blessings on all of us, Ralph

Mina Leierwood’s thoughts and feelings:

My dear Haideen, and my dear friends, (June 1, 2009)

Maryanna and I have been talking so much, thinking of you and Tom and wondering how you are doing. All of us in Eureka Springs were reflecting on the impact one person can have. As we were finishing Tom’s Shrine, a tourist stopped by to see the giant wind chimes, and asked what we were doing (Maryanna was wedged inside of the kayak, holding a piece of plexiglass in place while the silicone dried “This looks strange, but it isn’t,” Ralph said.) We were all laughing while we worked!

This tourist recognized Ripper the Friendly Shark and was sure he’d met Tom. A total stranger on a road in Arkansas was impacted by Tom Kennedy too. Random ~ but life is so full of patterns, and some days we just seem to be understanding these patterns, and how they weave our lives together to form meaning. Mr. Shrine and I reported tingles on our arms where the hair would stand on end. As if understanding was coming faster than thought.

Some of Tom’s ashes are there because Allen C gave me a little bottle. They are inside a small ‘mausoleum’, which Ranaga and I created using a cigar box “El Rey de Mundo”.

I echo Ralph in saying this was such an important piece/ process/work of love and art. Many people from many parts of the country worked on it. Kate from Bisbee, the Tuscon contingent….I was so happy to be there doing this. Sometimes sad, but mostly happy. Ranaga was saying, grief is mainly regret, and if you have no regrets over how you’ve spent your time here on earth, grief is light and easier to bear. Light and wind and earth connect us. Sound and water. We have a peculiar family of transformational people who engage in this life so fully. Since Tom fancied himself the Wizard of Oz, handing out awards to us all, I must accept this honor as a part of this Family of Wizards. And the magic continues.

Haideen, thanks again for being a part of our lives! I’ll never forget meeting you last summer in the parking lot of Intermedia Arts with the Mega Patriot Missile Truck. You were so happy to meet us!!! Minneapolis will welcome you with open arms anytime. Mr. Shrine wants to come to Mpls. for our parade, and would like to work on another shrine here. If you are interested in visiting us ANYTIME please come!!!!!!!!

LOVE is all ~ Mina L+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A great video song and tribute to Tom Kennedy

Ken Duffy sings his Tom Kennedy tribute song, “Tom Kennedy Was an Artcar-Drivin’ Man.” I sang this twice in memorial events for Tom, an artcar artist and friend who died on Easter Sunday, 2009. This version corresponds to what I sang at the big memorial on May 1 in Oakland (minus all the fab backup singers).

Phat Mandee’s Poem

Hey everybody, it was incredible getting to meet so man different facets of Tom’s friends, I mean, would have been better under other circumstances, you know, but if it had to be done, I guess we did him proud, I was honored to be included. If there really is an after life, I don’t know how he could have missed us celebrating and loving him.

I wrote a poem the morning after:

A Memorial, A Celebration, A Remembrance of a Life Well Lived….
a poem for Tom Kennedy by Phat Man Dee

“Wailing and heartache were all that were left
as I cried with the big brass band.

Sorrow and loss and confusion and pain,
Made tuneful with syncopation heart stain.

The sun went out when the sea took his life,
I could never feel good again.

Ripper the Shark drowned , not forgot,
1000 replicas would not replace him.

There were songs and altars and photographs too,
Proof you had been here, proof we loved you.

But nothing could have prepared me for the sound,
Of a marching brass band, wailing for the man who had drowned.

Their song was simple, it echoed the pain,
Of a life we lost as we cried in the rain.

Drums pounding, horns screaming, the fire flames high,
Primal silence and screaming, I could only cry.

A Little Bell whispered into my soul,
“If we loved him” she said, “He will never grow old.”

His soul is timeless and his message is true,
Lost not forgot, we are still part of his crew.

She said the reason he lived has not changed with his death,
We must all try to furthur his holy quest.

To live without warning, and sing songs with our friends,
The love is still there, it can never end.

He drove fast in the fantasia he made with his hands,
He adapted to sea forms to ride on dry land.

He made missiles to fire the harsh words of peace,
to warlords and monsters he demanded relief!

We love him and miss him, we must endeavour to be,
the people Tom Kennedy would want us to be. “

This past Easter Sunday, the profound Tom Kennedy and his loving family, friends and fans experienced the shock of his life being tragically cut short at Ocean Beach south of the Cliff House and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

The 48 year young joyful, whimsical, prankster, art car pioneer, artist/performer, progressive political activist, mediator and inspiring mentor – after a good session of body surfing with pal Mike Tackaberry – got caught by the combination of a large rogue wave, a rapid succession of waves and a nasty riptide ending his illustrious, prolific and greatly influential life.

tom kennedy

Please join me in celebrating the life of this magnificent and important man.

Time magazine called Tom “a fin man.” He was that and so much more.

tom kennedy

I first met Tom in 2004 when he was collaborating with my brother, Brian Goggin, on a piece of furniture sculpture filled with whimsy and levity – Desire for the Other – right up Tom’s ally.

brian goggin,tom kennedy

At the time, I was working with some good friends in San Francisco on a political action committee, WeCount.org, contributing to the collective efforts attempting to end our misery under W.

After checking out the sculpture’s progress at a South of Market studio, Tom and I had lunch and shared thoughts on our political activism that election cycle. Tom dreamt of touring art car parades nationally featuring a Bush missile truck. The missile truck became a reality, only during the 2008 election.

missile dick chicks,tom kennedy

After Tom’s passing, his mother Pat graciously shared with me the roots of Tom’s legendary art/political activism.

Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, “Tom as a small boy exhibited a well-developed sense of fairness,” Pat told me. Active in team sports, he was often a leader – primarily because he “knew what it meant to be part of something bigger.” This sense helped Tom to develop deep empathy for others, “He looked out for the underdog,” Pat added.

And he understood that, in speaking and acting out to injustice, it was important to work at the macro and micro level. Tom valued the importance of one on one interactions, mostly through joy, humor and love, but also through in your face antics.

The second of four children, Tom and his family moved numerous times during his childhood with brief stops in Portland, Or., Kansas City, and Oklahoma, before spending five years in Cleveland – he later graduated from a quality high school in a Detroit suburb. Along the way he experienced being different – like having long hair in Oklahoma – but also a team player and leader.

After spending two years at Michigan Tech, Tom, used to uprooting, journeyed south – this time to Houston where he landed a job on the loading dock of the Houston Chronicle. Soon he was managing the dock and then – flagged by management as a strong and effective thinker – transferred to circulation. Tom’s ride up the corporate ladder ended, however, when he discovered, amongst other unsavory things, unsettling practices the Chronicle used to boost circulation numbers.

By that time, Tom had gone back to school at the University of Houston in marketing, gotten married to a very charming woman and bought a house. While at the University, Tom took an elective in sculpture leading him, in the early 90s, to attend the Houston Art Car Parade. It changed his life.

Says fellow art car veteran and film-maker Harrod Blank:

“After seeing the effect these rolling sculptures had on people, he decided he wanted to make an art car and join that group of people. He made Ripper the Friendly Shark.

tom kennedy,harrod blank

“It suspends your disbelief. It’s a car, but all you see on the highway is a giant shark. It’s something you’re not used to seeing on a highway.”

Deciding to leave behind the more conventional life he established in Houston, in 1995 Tom set out on his own and settled in San Francisco.

From that point on, Tom brought amazing art to the people – he wasn’t too fond of museums, in part because of their lack of interactivity. And, his work became more political over time.

Good friend and Burning Man co-founder John Law posted out upon learning of our loss:

Tom was one of the kindest and sweetest men I have known. His big, muscular presence was that of a gentle giant, a protector and a gentleman. Tom’s sense of fairness and justice was as powerful as his creative urges. He was no push over, though. His work as an art provocateur and activist was tough, funny as hell and very “in-your-face” for those he saw as oppressors and forces of evil in the world. Greedy businessmen, slimy politicians and the like were the hapless targets of his art wrath.

The infamous performer Chicken John, a 2007 San Francisco candidate for Mayor, posted out:

His passing leaves us impoverished.

This is a big man, a giant almost. Stong. Powerful. Hard worker. Hands like medium Cornish hens….Tom’s body of work is astounding. He built American Art, the Art Car. And took us all along for the ride. Without fear or a parking spot for any of them. He lost his art to the tow truck many times. Can you imagine?….

Life is fragile. I will miss Tom Kennedy. So will a million others. The really sad thing here is all the kids that will miss his work… the work he never got to make. Lets make sure that we always have a spot for Tom to park….

After that lunch I had with Tom in 2004, he went on to protest at the Republican Convention in New York City. He even got arrested – and met his future wife and co-provocateur Haideen Anderson, a co-founder of the Missle Dick Chicks.

Here they are in the Hippopotamobile

tom kennedy,haideen anderson

In NYC, Tom joined the Missile Dick Chicks, who hailed from Crawford, Texas, in street theater/agitprop – he donned the masks of Cheney, Ashcroft and Rumsfeld. On the night of his arrest, Tom was Cheney and could often be heard grunting, “Go fuck yourself.”

Both Haideen and Pat emphasized what a great voice Tom had – both literally and influentially. His singing voice added to the effectiveness of the NYC protests. Tom’s public speaking prowess led to an interview with the BBC and his narration of Dust and Illusions – a documentary on the history of Burning Man.

Tom simply broke through and down barriers. In the 90s, Pat rode with him in Houston’s Martin Luther King parade. They were the first white folks in the parade and, fittingly, drove in Tom’s first art van – “Our Lady of All We Have in Common.”

“Ripper the friendly shark” was a perfect entree by Tom into the art world – it directly challenged conventional thinking in multiple ways.

As Law pointed out, Tom especially enjoyed in your face activism. After he and crew burned Bush effigies in the Houston Art Car Parade, the powers that be changed the rules to make it more “family friendly.”

In early 2007, Ben Cohen (Ben & Jerry’s) commissioned Tom to build the Topsy Turvy Bus.

tom kenney,ben cohen

The bus toured the nation in the run-up to the primaries protesting the US’ grossly disproportionate levels of defense spending over domestic spending on education, health care and the environment.

While Tom toured on Topsy Turvy with Haideen, they penned this poem:

WASTEFUL – DISTASTEFUL – DISGRACEFUL

Those of you who back the war
Who make-up what we’re fighting for
You’re truly living by the sword
Shame on you and your entire hoard

Those of you who pump the fear
Through mainstream media’s friendly ear
You’re the one who should be damned
By those of us with extended hands

War pigs roasting on the spit
Sausage bacon burned a bit

It’s time for you to call it quits
Go make some friends and chill a bit

All of you who were raised on hate
For Armageddon you just can’t wait

Your names are on the Devil’s Slate
A life in hell is your just fate

Pentagon Pentagon your budget’s bloated
Your wastefulness has been noted
The last time that the people voted
It was WAR that was demoted….

Those of you who deal in death
Whose lips drip blood with every breath
We hereby take your power away
And give it back to the people today

Where’s the wasted money?
In the land of milk and honey
You think this war is funny?
Your Pinocchio nose is runny!

Pentagon, Pentagon
Where’s that trillion dollars gone?
In the pockets of your cronies
Who are stealing the tax money
Rumsfeld’s legacy does remain
Public loss for private gain!

Like four of the great-grandparents he was named after, Tom, most of all, was a great adventurer – and right up to the end. While many of us enjoyed the sun, family and friends celebrating spring, Easter or Passover three weeks ago today, Tom was riding the waves of the Pacific Ocean one final time.

But because Tom so creatively modeled action, he leaves a great legacy inspiring many to continue riding life’s waves of art activism and our own individual means of creative expression.

Thanks Tom Kennedy – thanks for teaching us to enjoy life while speaking up to injustice. You will be sorely missed, yet live on within the millions whose lives you so gracefully touched.

Greetings,
While at Tom’s memorial at the Box Shop, I promised Tom’s mom that I would send her this picture.  Please, please make sure that she gets it.
The art piece is called the Gun Coffin.  It is made of guns that have been smashed and and welded to this iron frame shaped as a coffin.  Many different people have smashed those guns and then others have welded them on.  On the day of this photo, Tom smashed a gun and added it to the work.
He and Haideen are in the photo and so is John Ricker – the creator of the coffin.  I’m the one lying underneath…
The photo came from an article in the SF Gate.  That article can be found at:

I’m certain that Tom was involved in lots of other good work and we only see the tip of the iceberg.  I’m happy to point out, here, another thing in which he was involved.  As I come across other things, I will send them your way, Ms. Kennedy.
All my best,
Gilda

Here are some more pictures, from Burning Man 1995

Hello Pat,

I scanned some photos from Burning Man 1995 and put them up on flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/30595246@N02/sets/72157617441952581/

Let me know if you want me to email them to you. There’s only one of Tom himself, the rest have his car/s in them or are about the film Harrod was making at the time.

I knew Tom from Houston. I got my sculpture degree in ‘93 from UH when he was around. I remember the first time I saw Ripper, and heard Tom talking about it. He put me into a sort of trance with his dreams, and I remember thinking, “This guy is either a visionary who does shit, or he’s full of shit.” (Please excuse my French.) Turns out he was a visionary who made things happen–actual, real, wonderful things. I’m so happy I was able to share some time with him, here and there. Last time was in Bisbee and Douglas in 2007 in the company of another art car caravan.

I’m so sorry we lost Tom–a friend, cohort, mentor, magical being, a man–but the Tom you lost was your son. It’s not supposed to happen this way. Something is wrong with a universe that takes a son from his mother out-of-turn. I wish you many blessings and heaps of love to help you through.

Tom was at the center of many a great time, as these pictures show.

Love and strength,
Heidi
