Tom Kennedy says:

Much of my work involves the idea of transforming dreams into steel, whether in the form of an art car, mutant vehicle or some other fabrication. I love to enter zones of working when my materials, whether they be found objects or raw steel, begin to talk to and direct me. I attempt to load my work with energy, pouring calories into the pieces. I love to collaborate with others, and try to spend one-half of my work-time helping others with their projects. My own best work has benefited from the help and assistance of others. I believe in cooperation rather than competition. I like the finished pieces to be obviously hand-made and hand-crafted, not created by a corporation. At a time when fascism has descended upon the US, I like the idea of using art to fight back. I believe that the power of friendship has yet to be harnessed on the massive basis needed to save the world. I love to manifest dreamy ideas into reality and I hope this love is evident in my work."

Sculptures & Fabrications

In between car gigs, we make art and fabricate functional stuff that hopefully has an artistic element to it. I prefer to work with mild steel but also work with bronze, wood, resins and other media. I love rusted metal but have also enjoyed experimenting with patinas and other finishes.

Sentinel Bell
This bell was originally an oxygen tank, and it rings in e flat major with an exceptionally long sustain. It is finished with permalac after a patina of gun bluing and green pigment was applied under heat. This bell is for sale for $3000.

Globes
I love making globes and believe they are a very important symbol.

Head Tree
This 1993 piece was originally created for an outdoor sculpture show at the University of Houston. Now in the collection of William and PJ Whitehouse.

World Event
Three thirty foot trees made up the original (1994) tripod of this piece to be later replaced with steel legs, which were easier to transport. This piece went to Burning Man in 1995 and has seen exstensive action on various solstices, and currently resides in a Milwaukie, Oregon front yard.

Another World Event
Each tripod leg was over 40' long, created for Sculpture 2000 convention in Houston, Texas. Alas, a wayward dumptruck hit it and knocked the tripod down. The insurance payment from the truck company financed our year 2000 Burning Man trip.

Tables
A couple of custom mini tables made for Lenny and Pamela Mejia of San Francisco.

Tree Surround
Can be found on Sheridan Street between 9th and 10th streets in San Francisco.

Gates
On Oatfield Road in Milwaukie, Oregon, made of recycled steel for Pat Kennedy.

Bronze Urns
While working at the Havel-King Foundry in Houston, Texas, I was the primary assistant to Joseph Havel to create the plaster form and molds for five bronze urns for Houston's Museum of Fine Art. Two of the urns were four feet in diameter, two were seven, and one was ten feet across. I also worked on the team who cast the silicone bronze urns (in pieces) and tig weld them together.
